Analogue Techniques - 29.09.22
Analogue (or in other words, working with paper) was the older way of doing graphic design. But, people like Jimmy Turrell and Chris Ashworth still use these techniques today to make interesting graphic design outcomes for album arts and general works of art as well. Some techniques include using magazines to cut up photos that relate to the topic, Letrasets that use a transferable type of dry product to transfer premade lettering onto paper, and the typewriter for lettering as well.
Speaking of Jimmy Turrell, he was a student at Central St Martins School of Art. Most of his work consists of collage, drawing, screenprinting and painting, which he combines with digital techniques to bring his work to the masses, such as album covers and commercials that use his analogue techniques. Some of his clientele consists of Levis, MTV, Nike and Lexus which are all big named brands. Chris Ashworth, on the other hand, was a creative director for Getty Images and the art director for Ray Gun Magazines in 1997. He studied from the York College of Arts & Technology. His work compared to Turrell differs considerable, as shown below, which compares both Ashworth's work and Turrell's work;

On the right, is the work of Chris Ashworth. His style consists of a very gritty, very disorganised (in my opinion) but very eye-catching style called Swiss Grit, as it is inspired by Swiss design aesthetics. His work consists of being able to do everything analogue, but still be able to print onto books by importing them into a digital technique.
As you can see a clear difference, Jimmy's work is a lot cleaner, but still uses analogue techniques to bring his work a more personal touch to them. He still uses digital techniques as well to bring them to the masses and onto album covers, which is shown here.

Outcomes for Analogue Techniques

For this task, we had to make a piece of art/graphic for a favourite song that we listened to. For a song, I chose "Do I Wanna Know?" by the Artic Monkeys, as this was a song that came to mind. I personally do not have a favourite song, but this is a good song in my opinion. This song reminds me of objectifying women to have sexual relations with you, as the lyrics consisted of "Crawlin' back to you" and "I've dreamt about you nearly every night this week", which shows that the singer is obsessed with having sexual relations with this woman.

For this week, we had to digitise our work and to clean it up a bit, as we need to pitch our ideas to the class. I decided to choose the lunar landing ones as this would be a good suit for the cartoonish look that I have when using illustrator. The outcome is shown below;
