Creating Christmas Cards for College - Background Photos - 10.11.22

The next step in the process of making these cards was to find props. I asked around the college to see if there were any props and they had some props lying around, which was great as this enabled me to get the photos that I wanted after quickly brainstorming and creating the lettering the day before.

I had the presents, the graduation hat and the graduation scroll ready to shoot in the studio. The one problem that we had to fix was to try and make sure that my background was half red and half green. These colours are normally associated with Christmas, but the issue was that I did not have any green gel to cover the light with. A classmate of mine was able to help with that by adding the gels together to get the right green. He also assisted me with shooting to make sure that the lights look like they would be the right exposure. This was done by using both the lightmeter and by trial and error due to the flash lights not being the same strength and the same height as each other. There were also some lights on the objects, which needed to be lighting the table and the objects that are on the table. These were the shots taken in the studio;

The whole card initial layout was then produced in photoshop, as this would make laying and exporting the card easier for me. The layout and some small changes are shown below. I tried experimenting with the different layouts of each object but settled on just one as I felt like this one represented what I wanted.

Each change is shown below;

I added glow to the lettering so that it would be really easy to see the lettering as that was one of the problems that I was facing when adding everything together. After the visibility of the lettering was fixed, I then proceeded to change the background to something that would show the spirit of Christmas the best. I also had to change the saturation and brightness a little bit to make things pop out more, but still retain the visibility of the lettering.

The final layout and design is shown below;

I had to remove the Southport College logo from the design, as before sending it over I read that no logos should appear from the image. This would make for some quick photoshopping skills to remove the logo from the image.
