Picking Photos for the Being Human Project - 02.12.22

For this blog entry, I tried to organise most of my work for "Being Human" into my favourite photos that I want to feature in my photo book. I think that organising them into photos that feature people in the street getting on with their lives, just existing, feels like that would be the basis of what I want to capture.

I also like the idea of singling out individuals doing their own thing as I feel like it is more intimate if I am able to capture people by themselves or in a small group setting. I feel like being able to single out people reflects the type of photographer that I am, just me by myself and taking photos that I feel I can connect with, that I am an individual and taking photos is part of my creative freedom.

I might feature photos that I like as well which have good composition and features more than one person or history of what people have done, but I will need to see if it fits the task and see if it fits the style of my photo books.

I also feel like taking photos without people's faces feels more intimate as well, as adding a face in the photo makes the photo have an uninviting quality, as if it was taken within someone's personal space and without permission. Taking photos without people's faces encourages the person viewing it to have their own thoughts and feelings, rather than interpreting what the person in the photo is feeling at the time, which to me, is rather distracting.

I also personally do not like taking photos of people's faces as I find myself wanting to look away when people look me in the eye when taking street photos. It feels like, to me, people judge when I just want to be able to take photos of what people do in their everyday lives.

I want to be hidden when taking photos, not looked at or judged when taking them and I hope that I have been able to convey this emotion when taking photos on the street.

I have also featured myself in shadows, as I feel like that conveys the type of photographer I am. In the shadows, hidden from the world, without anyone noticing me when I do take the shot.
