Using Typefaces to Create Illustrations - 17.11.22

For this mini task, we were tasked to create illustrations using any typeface that we wanted to use and create from. This was inspired by the works of Tiago Pinto, who uses typefaces to literally create faces from type. Some of his work is shown below in the slideshow;

Tiago Pinto once said;

"For me every Font has a Face. So Bodoni is the Italian with a moustache, Futura is the stylish and good looking mid-life man, Times New Roman… well you got the point." (Feeldesain, 2012)

I like the idea of this quote as it makes designing things like this fun and very intuitive and relaxing as you do not have to worry about anything, just create whatever it is that you want to create.

Outcomes Inspired by Tiago Pinto

For this, I was tasked to create my own "type-face" using a font that I liked. I chose Old English as this was a very odd-looking typeface that uses the letters from Blackletter to create these letters. It is essentially a modernised version of Blackletter.

The outcomes are shown below;

As you can see, I have used all the different letters, punctuation marks and brackets to fully utilise the way that the typeface has changed the design of the type to suit the typeface.

The e is used for ears as the word begins with the letter e and I used a capital O for the little emblem of his hat, which is the letter D, flipped and changed around to look like a hat.

I also tried to create a dog from this idea of illustrating something using a typeface and these are the outcomes that I have created;

I personally felt like the design of the dog using a typeface does not really work as I need to change bits of the letter to suit the design better. For example, needing to bend the letter J so that it extenuates the legs and the letter used for the tail to be more squiggles to make it look like a tail.

I like the idea of trying to get this to look like a dog but will defeat the purpose of using a typeface to do so.
