Final Design Comparison - 28.11.22

 I tried to compare my design with the designs that I took photos of to see if it hold up to today's standards of book cover design.

13 Reasons Why vs My Design

For my first comparison, I decided to compare my design with a book that roughly has the same colour scheme as my design, even though the topic of the book is a much darker theme.

The colour for my book cover and the 13 reasons why book cover is basically the same, but with a two-tone finish, rather than a wrap-around cover.

The typography for the 13 reasons why book cover does have a sense of seriousness to it, whilst the custom lettering that my book cover has, has this sort of playfulness to it, making it look like a child has written the cover. I do think that trying to make the front cover typography look hand-drawn does add character to the cover, with the addition of the child-like illustration of the dog.

My design does stand up for itself, even if you do disregard the colour scheme of the book.

Becoming Mila vs My Design

For this comparison, I tried comparing it to a design that is light in colour and to see if my design can hold one up to a much brighter colour scheme.

Comparing the design, I also feel like both have their own personality and this is shown in the book covers. My cover does show more of a serious side (as the book is about the autism spectrum), whilst the other book cover has this sort of playfulness to it, which also has some elegance to the story.

I think that both book covers hold up to what they are trying to convey within their stories.

One of the Original Editions vs My Design

For this comparison, I tried comparing it to one of the original bookcover designs to my own;

The curious incident of the dog in the night-time (no date) Goodreads

Comparing my design to something that was used as an original book cover, I feel like I have given the story a new design with respect to the original book covers and story of the book. I also like the way that it is very different to the design of some of the original book covers that I found using the Padlet group research exercise. Overall, both designs hold up with respect to their designs and I would be very happy with this design if it does get published.

Improvements that Could be Made to the Cover

Some improvements that could be made to the cover is to make my own font using the lettering used for the title of the book. I mostly have all the letters needed to make them, just need to make the capitals and the missing letters.

I can also try and make the dog better as well, but this could also demolish the way that the dog looks handmade.

I am happy with the layout of the book, there is nothing else that I could change.
