Film Souping and the Focus on this Project - 06.03.23

Film Souping. I have always been interested in it since finding out about the topic and always wanted to experiment with anything I could get my hands on.

But for this project, I wanted to physically show what happens with a roll of film when submerged in harsh chemicals. This is to show that the chemicals that we use in our day-to-day lives are harmful to the environment. I also wanted to shoot anything that I wanted on that damaged roll of film that relates to the environment such as the landscapes, animals and portraiture. I also think that taking photos of rubbish with this damaged look would be nice as a topic as well.

I want to physically show that the chemicals that we use and the industry are actually more damaging to ourselves and the environment. I also wanted to see what is the best type of substance to use when changing the chemistry of the film emulsion. This range is the Ph scale and I think that experimenting with very acidic or alkaline would also be interesting to look at when mixing this in with the rolls of film.

With film souping as well, after doing some initial research, it says to leave the roll of film to soak in the soup for 24 hours and the amount of drying time could take up to a week.

I have left a roll of film in a mixture of salt and bleach, with water so that it is easier for the roll of film to soak in and after 24 hours, have left it in a room with a dehumidifier and on top of a radiator.

I have also been taking some of the film out of the canister to see if it has dried and by today, it still looks like the roll of film has not dried out yet. I will need to wait a couple more days (both left on the radiator and next to a dehumidifier) to see if the roll has dried out. I mean, I can always risk it and shoot the roll or dry it out in the drying cabinet in college, but everything about this process has not been fully documented for the precise time (and substances) and everything that I am doing is in the dark.

I feel like this would be the right time to start writing about the process and to talk about it here.
