Evaluation of Project - 26.05.23
General Strengths –
Being able to keep going, even when things were getting tight for time and thus stressful.
Planning and experimenting at the start was really good.
The outcomes for the project were unique and original, even if the CMYK process was like a design completed before for a project.
Going on holiday was both a weakness and a strength, as it finalised the project idea due to me wanting to create something for the country that I was born in, but took out a lot of time due to travelling a lot and seeing the country a lot as well
Primary research is always good for any project that I have done and thus, will keep doing this in the future
Strengths of the Design –
The use of Negative space within the white space was a good idea
The use of reg marks and CMYK confirmation bar was a good idea to incorporate into the final layouts for transfer sheets
Learning the process for a complete beginner like me was fun and challenging, I personally like the way that it pushed me forward creatively and with the challenge of problem-solving as well
Use of photography for when I was on Holiday – I have found another way to use my photos for the project, which was not the same as when a previous student created a CMYK print as well
General Weaknesses for the Project -
Double checking, if we have the supplies for the project and general college, facilites not working – this made the project start to become stressful due to not having the correct supplies needed for the project and the transfer images for the screens not being able to be printed at the right size, even printing smaller at A1 size (so that the poster size was A2) was not possible due to technical issues in college with regular printers
Time management – this only started becoming a problem after being on holiday for 2 weeks, as I did not have access to the facilities in the college, the broadband bandwidth and the time (as I was mostly out and about in the Philippines), I also did not take into account how long each screen would take to clean, create the screens etc.
Experimenting with the screen printing process – I would’ve liked to experiment with this more, but due to time constraints, this would be a problem. I would have liked to test out screen printing opaque inks with the colour layering as KCMY, as this was the way that one of my tutors have screen printed before, but due to hesitating and worrying about getting screens done, this would be difficult to add within the time frame
Not creating 3 screen-printed posters and a website – I just did not have the time available for this, as it was getting too close for comfort to wait for my screens to be created, screen printing them (at least 1) and then waiting for them to dry, getting another screen dried and printed etc. It was just a lot of time that I did not have and thus, I had to just use a regular inkjet printer for 2 posters
Weaknesses for the Design –
Not having this in English - might put people off as it is not English and the only English that I have on the design is the slogan for the campaign
The logo could do some work – I had general evaluation for the project from some of my friends back home in the Philippines and one of them wanted me to create the slogan into the shape of the bin, but due to time, I did not have time to do anything about it
Change of typograph for the wording on the poster – the friend also suggested something about changing the poster typography to something not as thick, but due to the nature of the screen-printing process, I had to settle for something that thick and explained to the friend that this would cause screen printing deviations and some half-tones to blend into the negative space
I wish that I could have improved on this and experimented with the design more, but then again, time and place was an issue for me
I could also have taken better photos as well for the project, but it was very difficult as I would need to be taking photos by myself and seeing that it was a family holiday, this would not have been okay with my family
The one weakness is also the grammar for the Tagalog, but overall it gets the message across
Opportunities in General -
I now have acquired the knowledge of screen printing the CMYK process, which (for a total screen printing beginner) is invaluable, as this could be something that I can improve on in the future and use as well
I also have learnt time management is an important part of the design process as well, as I did not learn to put contingencies into this project for physical work
I have also learnt that sometimes it is better to use your own facilities when the college facilities do not work and have to rely on on your
Speaking of physical work, I rarely have physical work when creating graphic design projects and the next couple of projects, this would need to be thought of either at the start or during the design process
This also means that I could expand more as a graphic designer if I start creating work from physical means first or during the design process, physical work is an invaluable tool for any creative, but it does require time for the process
Having semi-formed ideas for the project – This was a really good opportunity for me, even though I did not have a clue as to what I wanted to do at the start of the project and was glad that being unrestricted was a nice way to create something original and thought-provoking
Seeing that the Philippines is a developing country, this poster could be transferred over to something that can be easily printed on and could influence people to care more about the environment
Created a slogan for an international movement – this could lead to a worldwide movement that could take care of waste around the world
Threats –
One could be that this process is not original and thus could be replicated easily, but with a different design which someone has perfected and could be better in terms of design
Not creating an English version of this poster – as the poster wording is something that only Filipino people understand, maybe the poster could have just been in English to better accommodate for a bigger audience, but this could ruin the message that it is meant for something
