Screen Printing Poster 1 – 25.05.23

So, I managed to screen print one poster set. I managed to print 6 in total, 3 in speedball ink whilst the other 3 I used my own ink for. This is because as I have discovered, the speedball ink (even though it is process colours) did not provide the colours that were needed for the project.

First, the yellow colours used for the first screen and bass were too bright in my opinion and compared to the water-based ink that I bought specifically for this project. The magenta did cause it to be softer than before, but comparing the final outcomes for each ink, I think that I would choose the water-based ink as this is specifically used for screen printing CMYK.

I was also having problems with the screens in general. Blockages in the screen would then transfer over to the emulsion not curing properly and then would degrade. That is why you would see ink being transferred to the lettering of the poster. I was also careless when printing with the water-based ink as well as I would not leave the screen enough time to dry and thus causing some visual artifacts and would look like some of the ink got stuck to the screen.

I also needed to go fast with the screen printing with the water-based ink as this would block the screens if left on the screen for too long as it would dry very quickly. I also needed to be quick when pulling the screen off (was also probably the cause of the weird artifacting) due to the paper being stuck to the screen as the ink would dry quickly.

With each layer after yellow, I would need to clean each screen, which is not ideal as this would cause the whole process to slow down. I would like to print on the printing bed next time to speed this process up and also used the cropped marked version for each print, which means being able to either print at A0 for an A1 poster or print at A1 for an A2 poster.

Overall, with all the little human mistakes that the posters have, they add character to the poster and give this quality about them that the Photoshop prints do not have.

I also think that it would have been nice to timelapse something like this next time to show the process off, but I am still happy with the outcomes from this 4-day ordeal.
