Initial Ideas - 23.02.23

For this project, there were a lot of initial ideas that I could have done for this project and I will try and explain things on here.

First Idea - Appreciate Depreciation

For this first idea, I thought about how humans create things such as buildings and items and just leave it there to rot or in other words depreciate. I thought that this would be a cool idea for photography led campaign talking about how we can either appreciate the depreciation or to revitalise the areas that we live in. I can also see that Southport is in the depreciation stage of the lifecycle of a town/area where a lot of people used to go on holiday until blackpool saw a massive change and people started to go there instead.

I have already taken a lot of photos of depreciation or photos of waste before and during this course and I do think that this idea is great for adding the impact of what humans leave behind during their time on this earth.

Second Idea - Sustainable Packaging

Now, for this idea. I have always been intrigued with designing packaging sustainably and I would think that creating logos, the design guidelines and either packaging/posters for a created product would add more benefit to my portfolio. I do think that doing packaging is a safe bet, but I also feel like I have already done something like this for the other unit and I think that creating posters again would not be fun. Maybe another unit in the future, but for now this idea might be on hold.

Third Idea - Sustainable Merchandise

This idea did just come randomly into my head and would be an interesting idea to do throughout this unit. Focusing on being sustainable whilst creating merchandise and limiting myself to creating this. This would mean that I would have to use my computer for graphics, try and use as little carbon emissions as possible, whilst still being sustainable in the use of paper, electricity and single-use items. I think that this idea would be a nice touch to the main idea/subject that I want to do and would be an interesting addition to the project.

Fourth Idea - Political Environmental Messages

This idea also came up with the idea of sending a message to the government the idea of trying to promote more change in the environment and for more individuals to be more environmentally conscious. This idea came up by looking at the padlet workspace and then adding more to what was already there. I think that doing a big mural would also be a cool idea for the project, as this is something that I have not done in a while and would also be freeing in the sense that it has to do with more art rather than design. It is still a good think to try and be original with the idea and to push myself with a different challenge.

Fifth Idea - Creating a short film about sustainability, but make it dark and twisted

This idea also randomly came into my head with the design brief. It would be REALLY interesting to try and do a short film about the dark side of consumerism

Definition of Consumerism - To buy and own more stuff

I think that personally, I can relate to this because I feel like most of the things that I have bought for myself is for the sake of owning, such as collecting vintage cameras that I do not use much or buying things for hobbies that I rarely have time for or be weather specific.

The dark side of this could be out of money all the time, just not having a lot of space in the house for all your things or just be that these things just don't give you happiness

Sixth Idea - Creating a mosaic of a pile of rubbish by using photos of rubbish, by also using rolls of film due to the cost of the art form

This is something that sprung to mind due to thinking about how can I make the pile of rubbish more aesthetically pleasing and I thought about how it would be ironic to take a bunch of photos (all shot on film due to film costing more than digital photos) and then create this mosaic by using the different photos to create a bigger photo of rubbish. I think that adding this irony would be impactful and I think that it would be an interesting take on showing literal rubbish.

A deviation from this would be to create a photo book of places that is just full of rubbish and would be places where rubbish was found.

I think that this would be an interesting idea to do, but would cost a bit.

All of these ideas would be fun to do, but I would need to either research more into the stuff that I want to create or flesh out the ideas more. I would also like to take some time to think what I really want to do and would need some time either today or something other day to try and think what I really would like to do.
