Experiments with Scanner and Roller - 02.02.24

For these experiments, my lecturer suggested that I try some more experimental stuff and the photos below show the different ways that I was able to experiment with things.

She first suggested that I try and use a scanner, as the distorted effects that I managed to do in Illustrator reminded her of an Instagram reel that distorted lettering the same way.

I first printed out the lettering that I did for the initial experiment that I did because the font does look nice due to my previous explanations of how the lettering looks like someone bottling up their emotions due to the negative kerning of the lettering.

I then first experimented with how each piece of paper was moved whilst scanned. This gave me an unexpected effect of glitching. Unfortunately, there were some artefacts of my fingers getting scanned in as well, which I know I can photoshop out later.

Personally, having these artefacts within the scans makes them mean a lot more and adds a human touch to a somewhat clean illustrator lettering. The first set of experiments is shown below

I then played around with another idea that my lecturer through the use of Instagram reels and that was to try and play around with a roller that has been carved with some letters on it. I used my previous engineering degree to guestimate the size of the lettering that I needed for the roller and this consisted of trying to find the circumference of the circle that would be the height of the lettering that I will have on the roller. I also chose the word WOW as this did not need to be flipped or changed around to make sure that the letters were the right way around.

The dry textures that the ink gave me I liked as this adds something unique to every letter and print of the word WOW and also change with every roll of paint that I rolled for each word. I also experimented with the roller being wet as well and I personally and everyone else as well thought that the dry textures were more interesting compared to the different wetness of the ink.

The experiments are shown below for this;

For the last set of experiments, I decided to go back to the scanner to see if I could change the background of the scans and to also try and make gradients out of the pieces of paper that I asked to get to experiment with this. I also thought that if a big scanner is like a camera, then it should be able to take photos of me, right? And that is exactly what I did to create one of my favourite pieces that I have done for this project, which is shown below, alongside the different experiments that I managed to do as well.
